Onigiri, or rice balls, are traditional Japanese meal.
It is perfect for picnics as a quick meal.
But Onigiri has a couple of problems.
First, the stuffing is concentrated only in the central part of the rice.
Secondly, it is hard for some people to make a triangle shape.
When you mold Onigiri, it’s very hot,
And you have to make your hands wet and salty.

This year, a new version of Onigiri has been getting popular.
It is called Onigirazu, or rice sandwiches.
It is quite easy and simple to make Onigirazu at home.
You put rice and stuffing on the sea weed and wrap it.
The stuffing isn’t concentrated in the center,
But goes to the edges.
And if you use plastic wrap, you don’t have to make your hands wet and salty.
That’s why Onigirazu has been popular recently.

ラップの上に海苔を敷き、その上にご飯と具を載せて包むだけで、手を濡らしたり塩をつけたりしなくて済む上に、具がご飯の隅々まで行きわたるという長所がある。
